Smart Glass
Tess Parisi

General Information
Smart glass, aka switchable glass, is a glass with multiple panes that emits heat, light, or electricity transmission in between creating a barrier that can be flipped into a window in less than two seconds. It changes from translucent to transparent very easily and can be used in almost all settings. It can block light, but it is mostly used for privacy. They also give more privacy than an easily moved item like a blind or a curtain. There are also many different types of smart glass technologies such as electrochromic, thermochromatic, and suspended-particle glass.

Environmental Impact
Smart glass is incredibly energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The insulation and protection that smart glass provides lower energy consumption and limits the use of energy from artificial lighting. Smart glass also has no impact on indoor air quality.

Use in Interior Setting
1. In this interior of a hospital, smart glass is used to give separation for the patient, but if they want social activity it can be easily turned off for an open view.
2. It can be used in a hotel room where there is not a lot of space so it is nice to have windows but once privacy is needed it can be achieved.
3. In this workspace, smart glass can be created in different patterns to make it more interactive and cohesive in different designs.
4. In this exhibit, colored smart glass is used to create a certain cool ambiance.
5. This studio has a smart glass wall which can provide extra privacy for separate meetings or gatherings.
Application
Smart glass is mostly used for interior divider walls or doors that are multi use so that the blocking feature of the glass can be used. They are usually made in large portions, making it most necessary in large commercial spaces rather than small residential. It is also relatively expensive so it will not been found in many common areas.
