Porcelain

General Information
Porcelain is a fine yet strong and translucent ceramic. It is vitreous and resistant to dirt and stains. Due to porcelain's density, tiles made from this material have a low absorption rate, making it a hygienic material. Its vast qualities make them suitable for flooring, walls, tableware, toilets, and decorative pieces. It is also highly resistant to the passage of electricity making it great for insulation.
Porcelain is made with china stone and kaolin which is a fine white clay that is first fired at a low temp. and then fired again at a higher temp. Kaolin comes from a decomposition substance of granite feldspar while china stone can be found in one area of Cornwall in the UK. This mixture is finely ground, pressed, and fired at an extremely high temperature.
Porcelain tile should be installed on a clean, level, and rigid floor. When laying the tile, start at the center of the room and leave enough packing for grout joints. Spacers help with straight grout lines.
Porcelain tiles are easily cleaned with common household materials but typically only need water and a soft sponge. Constant exposure to solar rays does not change its color.
Environmental Impact
Porcelain is mainly an ecological material that is produced using efficient energy and water systems. Its production process creates zero waste due to the use of natural and reusable materials. This material has thermal inertia, which reduces heating and cooling peaks every season and ultimately saves energy. It has a long life and is recyclable. However, porcelain production requires a high amount of energy for the high temperatures used in the kilns.
Porcelain has no effect on indoor air quality.

Use in Interior Setting
1. These porcelain floor tiles from the "Matieres de Rex Collection" give off the effect of stoneware.
2. Espen Surnevik created this church covered entirely in porcelain.
3. Zhekai Zhang repurposes coffee grounds and uses them to stain porcelain to create a marble texture for these light fixtures.
4. Bestile's "Carmen" collection showcases the durable beauty of artisanal, handcrafted tiles.
5. Marazzi released a collection of porcelain tiles that feature hand-painted designs that boast vibrancy and authenticity.
Wall Covering
For a porcelain wall covering in a bathroom, it is important to consider the size and shape of the tile that you will be using. Tile can typically be installed over any clean, flat surface as long as that surface can support its weight. Installing a 1/4-1/2" cement wallboard to support the tile will help in resisting water if there are any cracks in the grout. It is suggested to use a premixed thin-set mortar as an adhesive with specific mortar for high-moisture areas. A polished finish will give a highly-reflective and shiny look but will be slippery when wet. A honed finish has a dull but smooth touch that is an appropriate choice for bathrooms where the tile will be subject to water.
