General Information

Lacquer paint is a quick-drying, solvent-based finish that when dried, produces a solid, durable finish. Unlike other paints, lacquer reactivates each coat underneath it to allow for a smooth, level finish, even if you apply multiple coats. It is designed to be chip-resistant, waterproof, and breathable. Lacquers can be applied to a variety of surfaces such as wood and metal and they come in a range of colors, as well as clear finishes.

Lacquer is made with a solution of shellac in alcohol, which creates a synthetic coating and forms a high-gloss surface. There are spray lacquers in clear, gloss white, and gloss black like Rust-Oleum that lend a very hard, factory-finish to wood and metal surfaces.

For maintenance of lacquer, it should be cleaned normally using a damp cloth and grease-removing agents. In any case, abrasive cleaners should not be used on lacquer.

Environmental Impact

Lacquer paint is very durable and lasts longer than any of its competitors without chipping and flaking off. It remains clear for years and non-yellowing options are available to keep your furniture looking in tip-top shape for a very long time making its life cycle costs very low.

Because lacquer usually has high solvent and VOC content and often contains the solvents xylene and toluene, lacquer is not considered environmentally preferable. In fact, conventional lacquer is one of the worst clear finishes in terms of emitting VOCs into your home. Therefore, lacquer does have an impact on indoor air quality.

Kitchen Cabinets

In this interior application, lacquered turquoise cabinets are topped by white quartzite countertops. The lacquer creates a visual impact and contrast as well as offers a unique texture and makes the cabinets the focal point of the kitchen. Lacquer kitchen cabinets require high levels of maintenance to keep them shinning. Lacquer kitchen cabinets are also prone to staining in the long run and imperfections on the surface are easily seen such as scratches and dents.
